Afia Pokua, a prominent journalist at Agoo TV, has recently become embroiled in controversy due to her outspoken criticisms of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
Her comments came in the context of ongoing tensions between the Ashanti people and other ethnic groups in Ghana. During a segment on Onua FM’s popular show ‘Bribi Gye Gye wo,’ hosted by Mona Gucci, Pokua voiced her frustrations about what she perceives as a sense of superiority being displayed by the Ashantis, as well as the Asantehene’s perceived inaction regarding these issues.
Following her remarks, Pokua faced significant backlash from various quarters, prompting her to visit the Manhyia Palace in an effort to apologise for her comments, which many viewed as disrespectful to the Asantehene.
Unfortunately for her, the attempt to seek forgiveness did not go as planned; her apology was firmly rejected, and she was instructed to leave the premises, with the added warning not to return.
Despite the intervention of some respected elders who tried to advocate on her behalf, the Otumfuo’s representative stood firm in their decision, leaving Pokua without any recourse.
In the aftermath of her rejected apology, Afia Pokua took to social media to express her deep emotional distress. She lamented the situation with a poignant post that conveyed her feelings of isolation and despair, suggesting that her actions had resulted in unforgivable consequences in the eyes of the public.
Her words highlighted the intense scrutiny and criticism she faced, reflecting her sense of hopelessness amid the turmoil that followed her controversial statements.
This incident underscores the challenges faced by public figures in navigating the complex landscape of cultural and ethnic sensitivities in Ghana.
