President John Dramani Mahama has indicated that a decision by Lincoln University to withdraw from him, its honorary doctorate degree, does not delete the institution’s special place in his heart.

Reacting to the development while addressing Ghanaians in the United States of America on Thursday, he stated that the institution holds a crucial part of Ghana’s history, thereby making it a ‘hallowed’ ground.

According to him, Ghana cannot, no matter what happens, ‘divorce’ Lincoln University from its history.

“For me, Lincoln University hold a special place in my heart because those are hallowed grounds for Ghana. It is part of our history. We cannot divorce Lincoln University from the history of Ghana.

“That was where our first President. Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah was nurtured with his intellectual capacity and his Pan-Africanist spirit, and it was from there he took that spark and led the liberation struggle not only in Ghana but across the African continent,” he explained.

He therefore postulated that Lincoln University will continue to be held in high esteem.

The University withdrew an intended honorary degree earlier this week, citing President Mahama’s stance on LGBTQ.
