Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital’s decades-long wait for a facelift seems to be finally getting a boost. A total of 124 individuals and organizations have stepped forward to support the hospital’s renovation, with top donors including Life Ally Ghana, Scancom Ghana PLC, Justmoh Constructions Limited, Joshop Construction Limited, Oak Plaza Hotels, Fidelity Bank, Church of Christ, Bost Company Limited, Prophet Kofi Amponsah and Olam Food.
The contributions, totaling GHC14,240,645.15, are a significant step towards achieving the USD10 million goal. The hospital’s CEO, Prof. Otchere Addai-Mensah, has emphasized the need for renovations, which have been put on hold due to funding constraints.
The King of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, is championing the Heal KATH project, which aims to revamp the hospital’s crumbling infrastructure. Despite its importance as the second-largest hospital and only tertiary health institution in the Ashanti Region, KATH has been neglected for decades.
With renovation work underway, the committee is urging others to join the effort.
Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), situated in Kumasi, the Ashanti Region’s capital, serves a vast population of 5,432,485 (according to the 2021 national population census).
Its strategic location, combined with the country’s road network and Kumasi’s commercial hub, makes KATH readily accessible to patients from all 15 regions, particularly those sharing borders with Ashanti.
As a result, the hospital receives referrals from 13 out of 16 regions, including Upper East, Upper West, Savannah, North East, Northern, Ashanti, Bono, Ahafo, Bono East, Central, Western, Western North, and Eastern. The hospital’s structure comprises 13 clinical directorates and 2 non-clinical support services directorates, ensuring comprehensive healthcare delivery.
