Liverpool forward Diogo Jota has tragically passed away in a devastating car accident in Spain, just days after marrying his longtime partner. The 28-year-old Portuguese international was killed along with his younger brother, Andre Silva, in the early hours of the morning near Cernadilla, a town in the northwestern province of Zamora.

Spanish news agency EFE reported the brothers were travelling together when their vehicle veered off the A-52 motorway around 12:30 a.m. Initial investigations suggest a tyre blowout during an overtaking manoeuvre caused the car to swerve and catch fire. Authorities confirmed that both occupants died at the scene.

In a preliminary report, Spanish police stated that while full forensic analysis is ongoing, one of the victims has been identified as Diogo Jota, who played for Liverpool FC, and the second as his 26-year-old brother, Andre Felipe Silva, who played for Penafiel in Portugal’s second division.

Jota, a dynamic striker known for his versatility and eye for goal, had a career that spanned top clubs in Portugal, Spain, and England. He began his professional journey in his homeland before moving to Atletico Madrid. He later made his mark in the Premier League with Wolverhampton Wanderers and ultimately joined Liverpool in 2020. His time with the Reds included a key role in their most recent Premier League-winning campaign, during which he netted six crucial goals.

Away from football, Jota was passionate about gaming and owned an eSports team. He often livestreamed on Twitch, connecting with fans around the world through gaming as well as sport.

His death comes barely two weeks after he tied the knot with Rute Cardoso, his partner of over a decade. The couple had been together since 2012 and got engaged in 2022. On June 22, 2025, Jota shared joyful moments from their wedding, captioning them with “Yes to forever.” The two shared three children together.

Jota’s sudden death has sent shockwaves through the football world, where he was admired not only for his talent but also his humility and work ethic. Fans and fellow players are mourning the untimely loss of a footballer whose career and life were still in full bloom.
