The Chief Executive Officer of the Consumer Protection Agency (CPA), Kofi Kapito, has proposed the establishment of a 24-hour fugu-making factory to make Ghana’s traditional attire more accessible and affordable for citizens.
Speaking on Joy News AM, he expressed his perspective on the economic impact of supporting local businesses.
“My take is, it’s a good call to put more money into the fugu-making people’s pockets. The question is, how much is a fugu?”
He suggested that continuous production could help reduce costs and ensure every Ghanaian can afford traditional clothing.
“When we do those things, we should consider whether, as he’s talking about a 24-hour economy, we should build a 24-hour fugu-making factory. So that it will be affordable. So that every Ghanaian will have access to wear fugu.”
Mr Kapito also acknowledged regional differences in how traditional attire is used, noting that Ghanaians in the south do not wear fugu on a daily basis.
He highlighted the cultural significance of Ghana’s traditional fabrics, particularly fugu and kente, while recognising the challenges of integrating them into daily wear.
“Unfortunately, Ghana’s truly most important traditional clothing that has been with us for the longest time is fugu and kente. By those two things, it’s something that cannot be worn or used on a daily basis. So, it makes it a little difficult.”
Despite the challenges, Kapito voiced his support for initiatives aimed at making traditional clothing more affordable and widely available.
“It’s doable. I’m not against it. She’s calling for that. My take is, we should make sure that it becomes something affordable. Something that every Ghanaian man or every Ghanaian woman, because they do for females as well, should be able to afford at least one fugu in their house.”
Mr Kapito’s proposal comes in the wake of the government’s declaration of Wednesday as ‘Fugu Day.’
The announcement was made in a statement signed by the Minister for Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie (MP), on behalf of the government.
According to the statement, the initiative is part of broader efforts to preserve and promote Ghana’s rich cultural heritage.
