President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Dr David Kofi Mawuvi Wuaku as the Administrator of the Ghana Sports Fund, a newly established body designed to overhaul the financing of sports development in the country.

Dr Wuaku, a seasoned banking and finance professional with more than 30 years of experience, assumes leadership of an initiative widely seen as a potential game-changer in addressing the chronic underfunding that has plagued Ghana’s sports sector for decades.

His appointment signals a clear departure from the long-standing reliance on limited government subventions and sporadic private donations that have traditionally characterised sports financing in Ghana.

While the Ministry of Sports and Recreation makes regular budgetary allocations, these funds have often been inadequate, resulting in stalled critical infrastructure projects and under-resourced talent development programmes.

The Bill

The Ghana Sports Fund Bill, 2025, acknowledges that the previous ad hoc funding model constrained the country’s ability to fully harness its sporting talent and infrastructure, ultimately undermining sustained growth and competitiveness.

Experience

With his extensive background in financial management, Dr Wuaku is expected to inject professional rigour and innovative funding strategies into the Fund, paving the way for more sustainable and impactful investment across all levels of sports.

The latest appointment is a pivotal step that could significantly enhance Ghana’s sports development and competitiveness on the continental and global stage.
