President John Mahama has described the United Nations General Assembly’s adoption of Ghana’s reparations motion as a landmark achievement, signalling renewed global momentum towards justice for victims of slavery and their descendants.
The resolution, passed on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, calls on member states to commit to structured dialogue and concrete measures to address the enduring social, economic, and cultural consequences of the transatlantic slave trade.
It secured strong backing, with 123 countries voting in favour, while the United States, Argentina and Israel opposed it and 52 nations abstained.
Reacting to the outcome in a post on social media on Thursday, March 26, President Mahama expressed delight at the development, noting that the resolution formally recognises the trafficking and enslavement of Africans as the gravest crime against humanity.
“I am overjoyed by the adoption by the UN General Assembly of this resolution,” he said.
He credited the success to broad international collaboration, highlighting the roles played by regional and global partners, including the African Union and CARICOM, in advancing the initiative from proposal to adoption.
President Mahama further emphasised the symbolic and moral significance of the resolution, describing it as an important step in honouring the millions affected by slavery. Quoting Haitian revolutionary Toussaint Louverture, he added, “The greatest weapon against oppression is unity,” urging continued global cooperation to restore dignity and justice to those impacted by the historical injustice.
