President John Dramani Mahama has emphasised the urgent need to reorient security personnel to prevent assaults on journalists, following a spate of attacks on media practitioners across the country.

Speaking during a visit to the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) on Thursday, January 8, President Mahama said the initiative would sensitise security officers to the importance of working collaboratively with journalists, recognising that both groups play critical roles in serving the public interest and promoting transparency.

The President strongly condemned attacks on reporters, pledging that such acts would not be tolerated under his administration.

He said the proposed reorientation would reinforce professionalism within the security services and create a safer environment for journalists to carry out their work without fear of intimidation or violence.

“There is no way we will tolerate the continued assault on journalists. We have engaged with the Ghana Journalists Association on these issues and will ensure they are in touch with the security services,” President Mahama stated.

He added, “Many of our security personnel need reorientation to understand that, just as they provide safety, journalists are also performing their duty to inform the public. They are not antagonists to each other; they are both serving the public.”
