President John Mahama has welcomed home 54 Ghanaian soldiers who returned after a successful humanitarian mission in Jamaica, commending their service as a reflection of the country’s commitment to global solidarity.
On Tuesday, March 17, the President joined the military high command to receive the contingent from the 48 Engineer Regiment, describing them as “brave” and dedicated.
The soldiers were deployed in December last year to support recovery efforts in Jamaica following the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa.
According to President Mahama, the mission was grounded in shared historical ties and Pan-African values, underscoring Ghana’s enduring connection with Caribbean nations.
During their deployment, the 54-member team worked alongside the Jamaica Defence Force and partners from the United States to rebuild more than 26 homes and public facilities affected by the disaster.
He noted that the non-combat operation highlighted the versatility of the Ghana Armed Forces, demonstrating not only their technical expertise but also their readiness to provide humanitarian support beyond national borders.
President Mahama praised the contingent for their professionalism and commitment, stating that their efforts had brought pride to the nation.
“You have made Ghana proud,” he said, commending their successful execution of the mission and their contribution to international cooperation and disaster recovery efforts.
