Political commentator Paul Adom-Otchere has stirred discussions with claims that former President John Dramani Mahama has quietly identified his preferred successor within the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Speaking on his Good Evening Ghana show on October 31, 2025, Adom-Otchere suggested that Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson is the candidate Mahama supports to become the party’s next presidential flagbearer. Energy Minister John Abdulai Jinapor is reportedly seen as the potential running mate.

According to the broadcaster, Mahama is reportedly confident in Forson’s ability to manage the party’s and country’s future challenges, particularly citing his performance in stabilizing the cedi, strengthening gold reserves, and overseeing improvements in fiscal management.

Jinapor’s selection is said to be influenced by his longstanding political relationship with Mahama, dating back to his time as spokesperson for the former president. Adom-Otchere emphasized that Jinapor’s parliamentary and ministerial experience complements Forson’s economic expertise, describing the duo as “Mahama’s ticket.”

If accurate, these speculations could present a setback for Julius Debrah, the current Chief of Staff, who has also been viewed as a potential contender for Mahama’s endorsement in the upcoming party race.

The comments add fuel to ongoing discussions about the NDC’s succession planning and flagbearer race ahead of future elections, highlighting the internal dynamics and political maneuvering within the party.
