President John Dramani Mahama has shared promising developments in the ongoing efforts to bring peace to the conflict-stricken town of Bawku, revealing that discussions between key rival groups and the Asantehene have yielded encouraging results.
The announcement came during a visit from a delegation of Mamprugu traditional leaders on July 17, 2025, where the president acknowledged the steady progress being made under the leadership of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who is mediating the long-standing ethnic conflict.
According to Mahama, the recent talks facilitated by the Asantehene have opened up fresh opportunities for reconciliation, with both sides reportedly showing a willingness to make compromises in the interest of lasting peace.
Reflecting on the current state of Bawku, the president lamented how the area—once a thriving economic and social hub—has been severely impacted by violence, marked by the presence of armed youth and the departure of professionals fleeing the instability.
He stressed that the stakes go beyond local concerns, noting that restoring calm in Bawku is essential for the nation’s overall peace and security. Mahama emphasized the importance of urgency in advancing the peace process, calling on all stakeholders to intensify their efforts and bring the conflict to a definitive end.
The government, he said, remains fully committed to supporting dialogue and ensuring the safety of affected communities as part of a broader push to end the hostilities and rebuild Bawku’s lost potential.
