Vice President of the Fertility Society of Ghana, Dr Promise Sefogah
A study conducted in Accra from 2022 to 2025 shows that male infertility is the main cause in 70% of cases where couples face difficulties conceiving, the Vice President of the Fertility Society of Ghana, Dr Promise Sefogah, has revealed.
The research involved couples seeking fertility treatment, with consultations led by gynecologists/obstetrician specialists.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Dr Sefogah, who is also CEO of Shape Healthcare Medical Specialist Centre, advised couples under 35 to seek help after one year of trying to conceive.
“If you are under 35, we try for up to one year. If conception is not happening, seek help. It’s important to seek help together with your partner,” he said, stressing that fertility issues affect both partners.

He highlighted that cultural assumptions often prevent men from being evaluated, noting, “We tend to incorrectly confer cultural immunity upon men.”
Dr Sefogah also warned that delayed childbirth can reduce fertility, especially in women, and that male fertility declines with age, particularly after 40.
He added that excessive alcohol and health conditions like diabetes can negatively affect fertility.
“The older a man gets, the longer it takes to conceive,” he concluded.
