A Nigerian lady has recounted an unforgettable incident involving her friend and a man whose online romance ended in disappointment after a long-awaited in-person meeting.
In a viral post on X (formerly Twitter), she shared how the man, who had been chatting with her friend on Facebook for months, travelled from Ibadan to Lagos only to abandon her at the motor park after seeing her for the first time.
According to the narrator, the man was visibly shocked when he met her friend in person, claiming that she looked completely different from the photos she had shared online.
Although the friend had used real pictures of herself, the man insisted that the use of filters had made her appear slimmer than she actually was. This discrepancy between expectation and reality caused the man to refuse to continue the meeting.
Recalling the event, the woman explained that her friend seemed nervous before the man’s arrival and even asked her to greet him first.
However, when the man finally saw her, he exclaimed in disbelief, pulling out his phone to compare her appearance to her online photos. Despite attempts to persuade him to proceed to his hotel, he refused and returned to Ibadan the same evening, claiming he could not continue the visit.
The story took a humorous turn when the man reportedly insulted the women in both English and Yoruba, comparing them to “rice and beans” and insisting they looked like complete opposites. The narrator clarified that although her friend did not intentionally deceive the man, he was unprepared for the extent of her body size.
As the story gained traction online, social media users shared their reactions. Some criticised the man for being superficial and lacking empathy, while others blamed the woman for relying on heavily filtered photos. Some users questioned whether the pair had never video-called during their months of online communication, suggesting that such calls could have prevented the misunderstanding.
The story has sparked a wider conversation about the realities of online dating, particularly the role of filters and photo editing in shaping expectations. While some believe the man should have shown more understanding, others argue that honesty in online relationships is crucial. As debates continue, the incident remains a cautionary tale for those navigating the complex world of digital romance.
