A manhunt across state lines has ended with the arrest of Kingsley Chinamezu, the 23-year-old accused of killing his girlfriend in a brutal machete attack.
The incident took place in Umuebulu, a community in Etche Local Government Area of Rivers State, where 44-year-old Confidence Konebari Sunny was found dead after a violent assault. Chinamezu, who hails from Ogbo-Hill in Abia State, reportedly fled the scene and went into hiding in Egbeta village, Edo State.
While in hiding, he allegedly began issuing threats to the victim’s family, claiming he could still harm them without consequence. The threats prompted a formal complaint, which led the Rivers State Police Command to assign the case to its Anti-Kidnapping Unit.
Using technical intelligence, operatives tracked Chinamezu to his hideout and arrested him on August 15. He has since confessed to the crime and is being profiled for possible links to other violent acts.
Police say evidence is being compiled and the suspect will face prosecution once investigations are complete. The Rivers State Commissioner of Police has praised the swift action of the operatives and reiterated the command’s commitment to making the state inhospitable to criminal activity.
The case has sparked renewed calls for vigilance and justice, especially in communities grappling with rising incidents of gender-based violence.
