Veteran investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni has praised the establishment of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) as one of the most significant legacies of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. He described the creation of the office as a major milestone in Ghana’s ongoing fight against corruption.

According to Awuni, the institution symbolizes the country’s commitment to holding public officials accountable and represents a turning point in efforts to curb graft. However, while acknowledging the office’s importance, the journalist expressed reservations about how the early occupants handled their mandate.

He noted that both Martin Amidu and Kissi Agyebeng, Ghana’s first two Special Prosecutors, faced real challenges in implementing the OSP’s vision but could have projected greater authority and impact. Awuni suggested that stronger leadership might have reinforced public confidence in the office’s potential.

“From my perspective, the first two Special Prosecutors had the chance to demonstrate that the OSP was truly special. More decisive action could have shown Ghanaians that the fight against corruption was being taken seriously,” he said.

Awuni’s comments highlight a complex reality: while the creation of the OSP remains a historic achievement, the effectiveness of the institution depends on the assertiveness and visibility of its leadership.
