The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), in partnership with the Manhyia Palace and the World Movie Awards, is set to launch a global film prize focused on tradition and cultural value.

The scheme will be named after the 16th Occupant of the Golden Stool, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the UNESCO representative to Ghana, Mr Edmond Moukala, announced at the Asantehene Art Awards held on May 13, 2026, at the Manhyia Palace.

The announcement followed what he said were advanced consultations with the Director of the Manhyia Palace Museum, Dr Ivo Agyeman-Dua.

“In consultation with the Director of the Manhyia Palace Museum, I’m pleased to inform you that the World Movie Awards, UNESCO and Manhyia Museum have advanced significantly in their consultation to preserve African living heritage and creative identity,” the representative said.

The new award will assess films from around the world on how deeply they reflect cultural depth and tradition.

“We are going to launch a movie prize award on tradition and cultural values soon. Movies globally will be reviewed and assessed on how deeply they reflect the depth of culture and traditions,” the representative explained.

He further noted that the competition will carry the name of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, in honour of his legacy in championing heritage and culture, particularly his work in inspiring younger generations to take pride in their roots.

“This is a global movie award, the prize for the continent of Africa would carry His Majesty’s legacy, as he has been championing this era of heritage and culture. But in particular, we would let his legacy in nurturing and inspiring the younger generation that they should not be ashamed or shy of their tradition and culture. It is actually your root and your living testimony,” the representative said.

He noted that the formal announcement will be made by Otumfuo once ongoing preparations are completed.

“We are waiting until all the work within Otumfuo’s entourage is completed and we know that he will announce it himself at the proper time,” the representative added.

The initiative forms part of broader efforts to safeguard African living heritage and strengthen cultural identity through creative expression.
