The Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC), in collaboration with the Ghana Prisons Service and Aboboyaa Company Limited, officially launched the Capital Behind Bars Initiative on Friday, 20th February 2026, at the MASLOC head office.
The launch brought together representatives from MASLOC, the Ghana Prisons Service, and Aboboyaa Company Limited.
Speaking at the event, the CEO of MASLOC, Madam Abigail Elorm Mensah, highlighted the long-term objective of the initiative, which is aimed at job creation for Prison Support Assistants who have received hands-on practical training in assembling Aboboyaa tricycles for a fee. She noted that the program equips participants with technical expertise not only to effectively lead the initiative as trainers for their colleagues and inmates, but also to expose them to entrepreneurial opportunities.
She further explained that the next phase of the initiative will be rolled out across all sixteen regions of Ghana. Through this program, inmates will gain hands-on technical training, real-world work experience, and meaningful engagement in productive activities to generate legitimate income even while incarcerated. This, she emphasized, will help prepare them for sustainable and successful reintegration into society, restoring honor and dignity after their release and reducing recidivism.
Following her address, the CEO of Aboboyaa Company Limited, Nana Susu Biribi I, reiterated the broader socio-economic benefits of the initiative. He noted its potential contribution to reducing the unemployment rate in the country and emphasized the importance of equipping inmates with practical, income-generating skills while serving their sentences.
The Director-General of the Ghana Prisons Service, Mrs. Patience Baffoe Bonnie, Esq., outlined ongoing reforms focused on skills training, AI integration, mechanized agriculture, and the expansion of industrial production to improve safety, welfare, and wealth creation for inmates and staff.
She further called for stronger stakeholder partnerships, public support through the PESPES Fund (Code: 9721*3100#), and renewed collaboration with MASLOC to advance the Service’s transformation agenda toward national development.
