There was chaos at Prampram D/A Basic A and Methodist Freeman Basic School on Monday, April 14, 2025, after 22 pupils collapsed following the consumption of a locally made drink known as ‘Asana’.
The shocking incident quickly drew the attention of Member of Parliament and Minister for Communications, Samuel Nartey George, who took to Facebook the following day to address the situation and calm growing fears.
According to the MP, he personally followed up with both the Education Directorate and the Prampram Polyclinic’s Medical Director to verify the facts.
He confirmed that out of the 22 affected students, 21 were treated and discharged for observation, while one child was kept overnight for further monitoring.
Mr. George noted that the vendor responsible for selling the suspected contaminated drink is fully cooperating with health officials.
Samples have been sent to the laboratory to determine what led to the children falling ill.
He praised the medical team at the Prampram Polyclinic for their swift and professional response and expressed gratitude for their efforts in stabilizing the situation.
He also extended his best wishes to the affected students for a speedy recovery.
The incident has sparked outrage among parents and raised fresh concerns over the lack of regulation on the sale of food and drinks in basic schools.
Sam George assured the public that he will continue to monitor the investigation closely and support measures aimed at protecting schoolchildren from such health hazards in the future.
