Ghanaian legal practitioner, Maurice Ampaw, has launched a scathing attack on Kennedy Agyapong, the former Assin Central MP, accusing him of undermining Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s chances in the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
In an interview aired on Wontumi TV on Sunday, July 20, 2025, Ampaw claimed that Kennedy Agyapong is fully aware that Dr. Bawumia remains the strongest candidate within the NPP, yet is deliberately contesting him in the party’s primaries to damage his prospects ahead of the 2028 general elections.
According to Ampaw, Agyapong’s intention is not to win but to reduce Bawumia’s vote share, thereby weakening his image and political capital in the eyes of the public. He argued that a poor performance by Bawumia at the primaries would send a dangerous signal to voters nationwide.
Ampaw also took issue with a symbolic hand gesture Kennedy Agyapong made during the NPP’s National Delegates Conference held at Legon, describing it as misleading and harmful. He said the gesture, which seemed to advocate for leadership change, cast doubt on Bawumia’s continued leadership of the party.
He questioned the rationale behind such a call for change, especially when the NPP had already settled on Bawumia as its 2024 presidential candidate. Although the party did not win that election, Ampaw insisted that Bawumia had put up a strong showing and needed only a modest boost in votes—around 9%—to secure a future victory.
He cautioned that discarding Bawumia now, after all the resources and public exposure invested in him, would be a strategic blunder. Ampaw argued that Ghanaians are already familiar with Bawumia’s vision, and restarting with a new face could disrupt the party’s momentum.
Ampaw further alleged that Kennedy Agyapong’s conduct is self-serving, as he is quietly hoping for Bawumia to stumble so he can step in as the alternative. Such actions, he warned, could sow division within the NPP at a time when unity is crucial.
He reiterated a past suggestion that the party should rather consider pairing Kennedy Agyapong as Bawumia’s running mate—a move he believes would consolidate internal support and boost their chances in the next elections.
