Raymond Archer, the current Acting Executive Director of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), is at the center of a major corruption probe targeting Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi. Archer is overseeing the investigation into the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who is now facing a barrage of serious allegations.
Chairman Wontumi was apprehended on May 27, 2025, after appearing at the CID headquarters in Accra. Following his session with the Criminal Investigations Department, EOCO officers took over, transferring him to their headquarters for further interrogation. The charges under investigation include fraud, money laundering, causing financial loss to the state, and illegal mining operations tied to his firm, Akonta Mining.
Raymond Archer brings a formidable track record to the role. Before stepping into public service, he made a name for himself as a highly decorated investigative journalist. His accolades include the Global Gold Medal for Excellence in Journalism, awarded by the International Federation of Journalists—the first African and youngest ever to receive it. He also claimed the Lorenzo Natali Prize and was twice named Ghana’s Best Investigative Journalist.
Beyond journalism, Archer has built a robust career in intelligence and anti-fraud operations. With over 15 years of global experience, he has worked with renowned firms such as KPMG and Kroll and played an advisory role in training anti-corruption units across Africa and the Middle East. He is also a Certified Counter Fraud Specialist and is currently pursuing studies in Artificial Intelligence at the University of Texas.
Archer had a direct hand in shaping the very legislation that established EOCO back in 2010. Today, he is putting that law to work under President John Mahama’s “Operation Recover All Loot” campaign, aimed at retrieving stolen national resources.
Although some members of the ruling party have suggested political motives behind Wontumi’s arrest, Archer maintains EOCO’s focus remains strictly on serving the public interest and ensuring accountability.
