Michy GH: Drill Is Not Ghanaian, Let’s Focus on Highlife

Published:

Ghanaian media personality and singer Michy GH, formerly known as Shatta Michy, has shared her thoughts on the rise of drill music in Ghana.

Speaking during an interview on Opemsuo Radio monitored by NewsandVibes.com she acknowledged the genre’s success but emphasized that it does not originate from Ghana.

While she recognized Ghanaian drill’s recent milestone of being featured in the Grammys, she pointed out that the genre itself is not native to the country.

She noted that while Ghanaians often claim that other cultures have appropriated Afrobeats and Azonto, they too have borrowed drill music, which has its roots outside of Ghana.

Michy strongly advocates for Ghanaians to refocus on highlife music, a genre deeply embedded in the country’s cultural identity. She believes that rather than chasing global trends, Ghanaian artists should concentrate on developing and expanding their unique sound.

She further explained that while amapiano is primarily a beat, drill represents an entire cultural movement. The genre encompasses a specific style of dressing, lyrical expression, and attitude, all of which originated from America.

For Michy, maintaining Ghana’s musical originality is key to long-term success, and she encourages artists to build on what truly belongs to them.
