The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has inaugurated a 10-member Governing Council for the St John Bosco College of Education with a charge on members to maintain the reputation of the institution and position it as a leader in the training of teachers.
The council is chaired by the Most Rev. Alfred Agyenta and includes the Principal of the college, Prof. Clement Ayarebila Ali; the President of the Students’ Representative Council, Zemlogo Cornelius Wewoli; a representative of the Ghana Education Service not below the rank of a deputy director, Prof. Godwin Awabil; a representative of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission, Dr Stephany Abokzele Adongo; and a representative of the National Teaching Council, Abraham Awini.
Also on the council is a representative of the affiliate institution that awards the diploma or other certificate of the college of education, and three other members, Abdulai Zanatu, Ernestina Atamona Pwadura and Andii Richard, at least two of whom are women.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony on March 31, Mr Iddrisu said the institution had built a reputation over the years and the new council had the responsibility to sustain it.
“It is my pleasure and profound honour, on behalf of President Mahama, who has so appointed you to serve on the Governing Council of the St John Bosco College of Education.
It is a territory that I am very familiar with, as many of you, including the principal, may recall.
I did my higher education A-Level in 1990-91, and then I went to secondary school very close to St John Bosco College of Education,” he said.
He said the school had a reputation and the council had the responsibility to keep that reputation and position the institution as a leader in the training of teachers.
New college of education
Mr Iddrisu announced that the government had taken a decision to establish a new college of education at Nzelebu in the Jomoro area of the Western Region.
“In consultations with the Director-General of GTEC and our secretariat responsible for tertiary education, government has taken a policy decision to establish a new teacher training college at Hazinlibu, Jomoro, in the Western Region”.
“This morning, I met with the chief executive of Ghana Gas to discuss how the government can partner Ghana Gas in the exercise and pursuant to the mandate of Ghana Gas to support the community in the catchment area of its operations,” he said.
Council response
Speaking on behalf of the council chairperson, Most Rev. Alfred Agyenta, Abdulai Zanatu accepted the responsibility entrusted to them.
“On behalf of the council and the council chair, we accept the responsibilities bestowed on us.”
“As we lead St John Bosco College of Education into a new era of education and excellence, we pledge to work tirelessly to uphold the values of our patron,” he added.
