The Governing Board of the Ghana Scholarships Authority members being sworn in
The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has inaugurated the Governing Board of the Ghana Scholarships Authority in accordance with Act 1149, approved by President John Dramani Mahama, to strengthen the regulation and administration of scholarships in the country.
Speaking at the inauguration, the minister noted that the establishment of the Authority fulfils a major commitment to end practices of nepotism and partisan influence in the award of scholarships.
He stressed that scholarship awards should no longer be based on individual discretion but guided by a structured and institutional mandate vested in the Authority.
Iddrisu explained that the justification for awarding scholarships will be anchored on merit, genuine need, specific beneficiary categories and national development priorities.
He further urged the authority to uphold high standards of accountability and transparency in the discharge of its responsibilities to ensure public confidence in the scholarship system.
In response, the Chairperson of the Board, Samuel Garba, on behalf of the members, expressed appreciation to the Minister of Education and the President of the Republic for the confidence they had reposed in them. The Chairperson assured that the Authority has turned a new page and is committed to investing in the youth of Ghana while operating with competence, integrity and strong ethical values.
The Governing Board is made up of representatives from key institutions, including relevant sector ministries, the Office of the Attorney-General, the Association of Ghana Industries, the Students Loan Fund, civil society in education, the Ghana Scholarships Authority Secretariat, and nominees of the President.
