Anti-corruption campaigner Edem Senanu has weighed in on concerns raised by the Minority in Parliament regarding the use of a private jet owned by the President’s brother, Ibrahim Mahama, stating that there is currently no evidence of an actual conflict of interest.
The Minority has announced its intention to petition the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) over the alleged conflict-of-interest concerns involving President John Mahama.
According to the Minority, the President’s continued use of a private jet owned by his brother raises constitutional concerns and undermines public confidence in the integrity of the presidency.
Speaking on JoyNews The Pulse on Thursday, March 26, in reaction, Mr Senanu explained that conflicts of interest typically come in three forms: potential, actual, and apparent.
According to him, “the minority seems to be dwelling in the space of the apparent, where one may perceive or believe something could go wrong. That does not constitute an actual conflict of interest.”
Mr Senanu emphasised that remedies exist for situations of potential conflict, including declaring one’s interest or recusing oneself from related decisions.
“Until there is a specific incident they are referring to, there is no breach, and this sounds very speculative,” he added.
Addressing whether the situation raises ethical concerns about transparency, Mr Senanu noted that a conflict of interest is only relevant when a personal interest compromises professional decision-making.
“One needs to look at the data in terms of the tender committee or decision-making processes. Until there is tangible evidence that influence altered decisions, the concerns are circumstantial,” he said.
