The President of the University of Ghana’s Students’ Representative Council for the 2024/2025 academic year — who is also known in showbiz as Guru — has stepped into the growing debate over the condition of the prize vehicle awarded to the 2025 Miss UG winner.

A viral video shows the musician reacting to the pageant winner’s frustration, especially her remark that the car presented to her looked as though it had existed for nearly a century. Guru countered the claim with sarcasm, pointing out that vehicles even older than that are still functional and preserved at places like the Manhyia Palace.

He argued that very few vehicles in the country can truly be described as “brand-new” and insisted the important thing was that the car could start and move at the time of presentation.

The dispute began after Mariam Jasmine Saaka, who won the Miss UG crown in August, publicly revealed her disappointment with the prize. She displayed the black Toyota Vitz on social media, describing it as heavily worn-out and nothing like the fresh vehicle she expected to receive.

Jasmine said the car was in such bad shape that she eventually left it unused on campus. She highlighted a long list of defects, including a glove box that fell apart, loose interior fittings, missing handles, and mechanical problems that made it impossible to drive. According to her, no winner should be given a prize in such condition.

Guru, however, disputed the idea that the SRC handed over a “dead” car, maintaining that it was able to start when she received it.

The controversy has sparked discussions among students and alumni, many questioning the management of SRC funds, transparency in pageant prizes, and how the issue will be resolved moving forward.
