The Member of Parliament (MP) for the Asene-Akroso-Manso Constituency in the Eastern Region, George Kwame Aboagye, has organised an award ceremony to honour outstanding teachers from both public and private schools in the constituency at a cost of GH₵350,000.

Each of the 22 hardworking teachers received items such as motorbikes, double-decker refrigerators and gas cookers in addition to citations.

Two pupils, one each from public and private schools, who excelled in the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and are currently in Senior High Schools, were also given GH₵5,000 each.

The ceremony attracted dignitaries, including directors of education, traditional rulers, the Clergy, the Muslim community and politicians from both sides of the political divide.

Prominent among them were the Eastern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Jeff Konadu Addo; the Abontendomhene of the Akyem Kotoku Traditional Area, Nana Ankomah Bempong; the Sanaahene of Akyem Manso, Nana Dr Obeng Baah; the Municipal Director of Education for Kwaku South, William Frempong Nyarko, and the District Education Director for Asene-Manso-Akroso, Hayford Ganyuie Amedagbey.

Outstanding performance

Speaking at the ceremony, the MP, Mr Aboagye, stressed that the award scheme, which he initiated last year, was aimed at motivating the teachers to give of their best in order to raise the quality of education in the constituency.

He commended teachers in the district for their outstanding performance, which reflected in this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and urged them to sustain the spirit.

Mr Aboagye said that since he became the MP in 2017, he had provided 14 Junior High Schools with Information Communication Technology (ICT) centres equipped with 20 computers.

He advised the pupils and students in the area to study hard to become responsible future leaders and to contribute their quota towards the development of the district.

The Municipal Director of Education for Kwaku South, William Frempong Nyarko, who was the guest speaker for the function, stressed that “teaching is not merely a profession but a calling, as teachers are the builders of human capital, the torch bearers of knowledge and architects of national development.”

He was full of praise for teachers in the district for demonstrating resilience and commitment, often producing remarkable results.

“Some of the teachers walk long distances to reach their schools. Others dig into their own pockets to support learners, and many go beyond the classroom, yet their sacrifices do not always make headlines,” he said

Motivating fraternity

Mr Nyarko said “the MP’s teachers prize is, therefore, more than an award ceremony, but an affiliation that excellence matters, dedication counts and hard work would not go unnoticed.”

He stressed that “by recognising outstanding teachers, we are not only honouring individuals, but also motivating the entire teaching fraternity to aim higher and give of their best.”

The Municipal Director commended the MP, Mr Aboagye, and others who sponsored education in the district, stressing, “Education thrives when stakeholders work together, and today’s event is a shining example of such collaboration.”

The Asene-Manso-Akroso District Education Director, Hayford Ganyuie Amedagbey, noted that teachers were not merely instructors of lessons, but moulders of characters and builders of dreams, as in the classrooms they might be simple in structure but rich in purpose, adding: “Our teachers ignite curiosity, inspire confidence and plant the seeds of lifelong learning”.

Other speakers at the ceremony, chaired by the Sanaahene of Akyem Manso, Nana Dr Obeng Baah Kyiretwie, included the District Education Director for Kwaku East, George Kwame Somiah.
