Members of Parliament (MPs) have welcomed government’s decision to designate every Wednesday as National Fugu Day, describing it as a bold step to preserve Ghana’s cultural heritage.

Legislators further urged the government to provide financial support to Fugu weavers and traders to sustain the industry and expand its economic potential.

She noted that although the attire originated in northern Ghana, it has transcended regional boundaries and gained national prominence.

“Today, the smock is worn by Ghanaians across the country during festivals, funerals, weddings, and other public gatherings,” she said.

Dr Ayensu-Danquah emphasised that the Fugu symbolised strength, cultural pride, and unity, making it a powerful emblem of Ghana’s identity.

She lamented the mischaracterisation of the attire abroad, recalling how some Zambians wrongly referred to it as a “blouse” or “parachute” when President John Dramani Mahama wore a smock during a state visit to Zambia.

She described the incident as unfortunate but also as an opportunity to educate the global audience on the cultural importance of Fugu.

The Essikado-Ketan legislator reiterated Parliament’s call for government to invest in the Fugu industry by supporting local weavers and traders.

Such measures, she argued, would not only safeguard Ghana’s cultural heritage but also create jobs and boost the textile sector.

Contributing to the statement, Mr Isaac Adongo, the Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga Central, Kwame Anyimadu-Antwi, Member of Parliament for Asante-Akim Central, and Habib Iddrisu, Member of Parliament for Tolon, lauded the move to institute a national day to promote the wearing of the attire.

They expressed optimism that declaring National Fugu Day would reinforce Ghana’s rich traditions and promote economic opportunities.
