MultiChoice Denies Price Cut Deal After Sam George’s Announcement

DStv Users React After Sam George Announces Massive Channel Upgrade—No Price Cut
  • Just hours after Communications Minister Sam George announced that MultiChoice Ghana had agreed to reduce DStv subscription fees, the broadcasting giant has issued a statement denying any such deal.
  • While both parties are locked in negotiations over pricing concerns, MultiChoice insists no agreement has been reached—setting the stage for a regulatory showdown.

The tug-of-war over DStv pricing in Ghana has taken a dramatic turn. Hours after Communications Minister Sam George told the press that MultiChoice Ghana had “finally accepted” a price reduction, the company fired back with a firm denial.

In a statement released Friday, MultiChoice Group clarified that while it is participating in a government-led committee to resolve pricing concerns, it has not agreed to lower subscription fees. “We continue to engage with the Minister… but we wish to clarify that MultiChoice Group has not agreed to a price reduction,” the statement read.

This rebuttal directly contradicts Sam George’s earlier remarks, where he claimed that MultiChoice had accepted the need for a reduction and was now negotiating the percentage. The Minister had also announced a 14-day deadline—ending September 21—for the committee to finalize the new pricing structure.

MultiChoice Ghana has been under pressure since August, facing a GH¢10,000 daily fine for failing to submit pricing data, and a 30-day suspension notice for non-compliance. The government is demanding a 30% cut in subscription fees, citing affordability concerns and regional pricing disparities.

With both sides now publicly contradicting each other, the committee’s next steps—and its ability to deliver a resolution within the Minister’s timeline—remain uncertain.
