A 25-year-old woman, Vera Asare, is facing manslaughter charges after allegedly pouring acid on her boyfriend, Daniel Omane, in a case that has sparked outrage across the Eastern Region.
The Koforidua District Magistrate Court has referred the matter to the High Court for full trial, with Vera ordered to remain in police custody for two weeks ahead of proceedings scheduled to begin on October 13, 2025.
Daniel Omane died on July 25 at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital after months of battling injuries sustained in the November 2024 attack. Investigators say Vera allegedly carried out the act while Omane was asleep in his room, following escalating tensions in their relationship.
The couple, who shared a home and a three-year-old daughter, had reportedly endured frequent arguments and accusations of infidelity. Vera was said to be jealous and confrontational, often clashing with women she suspected of being involved with Omane. The situation reportedly worsened when Omane decided to end the relationship.
On the night of the incident, Vera allegedly entered his room and poured acid on him. His screams alerted co-tenants, who rushed to his aid and handed Vera over to the police. He was initially treated at the Eastern Regional Hospital before being transferred to Korle Bu, where he later died.
Vera was first arrested and remanded, then granted bail to care for their child. Following Omane’s death, she was re-arrested and now faces fresh charges, including murder. The Eastern Regional State Attorney, Emily Addo-Kyereh, is leading the prosecution, with investigators relying on the autopsy report from Korle Bu to build their case.
The incident has triggered widespread public reaction, with family members and sympathisers flooding the court in branded T-shirts to demand justice. The family says Daniel’s death has left a permanent void, but they remain hopeful that the trial will bring closure.
