The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations (NAIMOS) has issued a strong warning to illegal miners using firearms, urging them to desist or face a more forceful response from the taskforce.

Speaking at a NAIMOS Editors’ Forum and Quarterly Press Briefing in Accra, Director of Operations, Colonel Dominic Buah, revealed that a significant number of illegal miners, commonly known as galamsey operators, are heavily armed—posing a serious national security threat.

According to him, the presence of weapons in illegal mining areas increases the risk of violent confrontations with security personnel.

“There are several weapons in the fields. As you can see, 59 weapons have already been retrieved, and there are more in the hands of these galamseyers. This is a huge national security risk. When they have weapons on the field, any confrontation could lead to gunfire.

“As I reiterated previously, NAIMOS will not stand by and watch people use weapons against us. We are better trained in weapons,” he stated.

Colonel Buah, however, cautioned illegal miners to lay down their arms and cease such activities, stressing that the task force will respond decisively to any threats.

He also assured the public that all excavators and weapons seized during anti-illegal mining operations are being securely kept and properly accounted for.

“All excavators seized by NAIMOS are intact,” he said, explaining that the machines are being held at undisclosed secure locations pending further directives from the government.

He noted that the Ministry and relevant state authorities are currently reviewing the situation and will determine the appropriate course of action regarding the seized equipment.

Colonel Buah further disclosed that weapons retrieved during operations are also being safely preserved. He indicated that the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons has formally communicated with the Secretariat through the Ministry, outlining procedures for documenting and disposing of the seized arms.

He emphasised that all processes are being carried out in line with established regulations and in coordination with relevant state institutions.

Reaffirming NAIMOS’ commitment, Colonel Buah stated that the task force remains resolute in tackling illegal mining while ensuring due process in handling confiscated equipment and materials.
