Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has unveiled shocking revelations of sabotage within the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), disclosing that the organization’s digitalization efforts were thwarted by internal actors.
Speaking at a public event, Dr. Bawumia revealed that malicious ransomware was introduced into the system by staff within the IT department, leading to the collapse of the digitalization initiative.
“So, I said we need to send in a team to digitalize the new collection of the Electricity Company of Ghana, so we sent in a team, and we began the process of digitalization.”
“Can you believe that workers within the system sabotaged it? They put in ransomware into the whole system. And the system essentially collapsed. We had to send in national security to eventually find that it was some of the staff at the IT department who were culpable.”
The revelation of internal sabotage underscores the challenges faced by organizations in their efforts to embrace digital transformation. The malicious insertion of ransomware into ECG’s systems not only disrupted operations but also posed significant security risks and financial implications for the company.
Following the discovery of the ransomware attack, national security agencies were deployed to investigate the matter and identify the perpetrators.
The revelation has prompted calls for enhanced cybersecurity measures within the public sector to safeguard critical infrastructure and prevent similar incidents in the future.
