The National Communications Authority (NCA) has ordered the suspension of Wontumi Radio and Wontumi TV, along with several other stations, over violations of Ghana’s broadcasting regulations.
In a statement released on its official social media pages on August 12, the NCA confirmed that the move affects nine radio stations in total. The suspensions, the regulator said, follow the expiration of a 30-day grace period granted by President John Dramani Mahama for defaulting broadcasters to resolve outstanding legal and regulatory breaches.
According to the NCA, six stations “failed, reduced, and neglected” to take corrective action during the amnesty period, leading to the termination of their operations. The affected outlets include Dreams Ghana Media Limited and Jam Multimedia Limited.
The statement further revealed that three stations — among them Wontumi Multimedia Company Limited — addressed some violations but failed to resolve key issues such as the unauthorized use of studio-to-transmitter link frequencies and unapproved transmitter sites.
While many broadcasters used the amnesty window to regularize their operations, the NCA stressed that compliance with broadcasting laws remains non-negotiable.
