A section of National Democratic Congress (NDC) leaders from the Kusaug Traditional Area has voiced deep frustration with former President John Dramani Mahama, criticizing him for what they describe as a lack of meaningful response to the worsening insecurity in Bawku.
During a press briefing on July 15, 2025, constituency executives drawn from six districts—Binduri, Bawku Central, Pusiga, Tempane, Zebilla, and Garu—said they felt betrayed by the continued silence of the party’s flagbearer, despite the region’s overwhelming support for him in the last general elections.
According to the group, the people of Kusaug had backed Mahama and the NDC with the expectation that their votes would lead to protection, peace, and justice for their communities. Instead, they say their hopes have been shattered, with no clear action taken by the leadership to address escalating violence in the area.
Their frustration was heightened by recent developments, including a violent incident on July 13, 2025, and the reported destruction of a symbolic statue of the Bawku Naba. These events, they claim, have intensified feelings of abandonment, especially in the absence of a public statement or intervention from Mahama.
The executives revealed that their credibility among their own constituents is under threat, as many locals now view them as complicit in a system that has failed to deliver security or uphold the dignity of the Kusaug people. They signaled their unwillingness to continue defending party leadership under such conditions.
They further cautioned that if Mahama does not demonstrate decisive and public leadership on the ongoing crisis, the NDC’s grassroots support in the region could erode significantly, making future mobilisation efforts difficult. They insisted that the patience of their communities has been stretched to its breaking point.
