National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Twifo Atti Morkwa, David Vondee, has urged party members to avoid seeking multiple appointments under the John Dramani Mahama administration, arguing that governance must be inclusive and fair to the millions who supported the party’s return to power.
Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show on January 28, in relation to discussions around the Ayawaso East parliamentary seat, Mr Vondee said President Mahama has a responsibility to serve all Ghanaians, regardless of how they voted in the elections.
“The number of people who voted for His Excellency John Dramani Mahama was almost seven million,” he said. “As President of the Republic of Ghana, he will need to satisfy every individual, whether you voted for him or not. Either directly or indirectly, we need to satisfy everybody.”
Mr Vondee stressed that within the NDC, there must be a clear understanding that party members cannot “fight for two positions at the same time” when many others are waiting for opportunities to serve.
“We have millions of people who are waiting to be appointed, who are waiting to be assigned, who are waiting to get part of the cake that we all fought for,” he noted, adding that fairness in appointments is critical at this stage of the party’s governance.
He praised President Mahama for committing to a lean government structure, particularly his pledge to appoint only 60 ministers, describing it as a rare example of a president fulfilling a campaign promise.
“For the first time, a president is delivering on his promise. It is a plus to all of us, the NDC people, that our president is living up to his word,” Mr Vondee said.
Using the case of Baba Jamal as an example, the MP explained that the party must uphold clear principles when it comes to holding public office. According to him, if Baba Jamal were to contest and win a parliamentary seat, he would be required to resign from any ambassadorial role he currently holds.
“If Baba Jamal wins the election, he is not going to have two positions. He will have to let go one,” Mr Vondee explained. “That should apply to all members of the NDC who are seeking double positions.”
He clarified that he has no objection to party members pursuing political ambitions, as long as they are willing to relinquish existing roles in line with the law and party values.
His comments come amid broader conversations within the NDC about appointments, party unity and the need to balance reward for loyalty with effective governance, as the Mahama administration settles into office.
