A growing wave of disappointment has been expressed by some netizens over the silence of popular Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie during the recent protest by Democracy Hub..
The demonstration, which has gained significant attention, centres on issues like illegal mining and other pressing concerns in Ghana, but Sarkodie’s absence from the conversation has not gone unnoticed.
Many social media users, both supporters and critics, have called on Sarkodie to speak out, drawing comparisons to his involvement during Nigeria’s EndSARS movement.
Back then, Sarkodie was vocal, using his platform to speak against police brutality and other injustices in Nigeria.
His decision to remain quiet amid the current protests in Ghana has led some to question why he hasn’t taken the same stand in his home country, especially when his influence could potentially amplify the protesters’ demands.
On the other hand, several other Ghanaian celebrities have been active in supporting the demonstrators.
Notable figures such as Efya, Berla Mundi, and Lydia Forson have used their platforms to openly criticise what they describe as the unfair treatment of protesters.
Their reactions came after 39 individuals were reportedly arrested during peaceful demonstrations.
These protests, which aimed to highlight issues like illegal mining, were seen by many as a way for citizens to voice their frustrations about the state of affairs in the country.
However, the arrest of protesters sparked outrage among supporters, who believe that the authorities violated their right to peaceful assembly.
The contrasting approaches of Ghanaian public figures have fuelled conversations online, with many praising those who have lent their voices to the cause.
At the same time, the silence of Sarkodie, a figure known for his influence in the country, continues to raise questions.
Ghanaians are watching closely to see if the rapper will eventually address the situation, as more and more people hope that influential figures like him will stand up for the ongoing fight for change in Ghana.
The police reported that protesters unlawfully assembled at the 37 Intersection, attacking officers and disrupting their duties. The demonstrators entered a police vehicle, removed the ignition key, and threw it away.
They also pushed down crash barriers, obstructed traffic, caused damage, and disturbed the peace.
Thirty-nine protesters were remanded in custody, with 28 in police custody and 11 in prison custody.
The court set dates for their reappearance, with 30 scheduled for October 8, 2024, and nine for October 11, 2024. An additional 11 protesters were arraigned and remanded on September 25.
