The Executive Secretary of the National Identification Authority (NIA), Yayra Koku, says an imminent amendment of L.I. 2111 will bar the photocopying of a Ghana Card.
According to him, once the amendment matures, it will be an offence to photocopy the identity card.
In addition, it will bar the running of a physical check on someone to offer service.
“An amendment of L.I. 2111 has been laid before the Parliament of Ghana. Once passed, it will be an offence to even make a photocopy of your Ghana Card. – Yayra Koku, Executive Secretary of the National Identification Authority.”
The NIA has long advocated against photocopying of the card for any verification process, which it says violates data protection guidelines.
As part of standard procedures, it said, institutions are to subscribe to the verification platform of the NIA to get the needed information.
“Instead of subscribing to our verification platform and getting the right information, these institutions have resorted to taking the Ghana card from applicants and making photocopies,” it said in a statement issued last year.
