The Ghana Sports Fund has received a powerful early endorsement after the National Investment Bank (NIB) became the first corporate institution to make a financial contribution, presenting a cheque for GH¢100,000 to support sports development nationwide.
In what officials described as a landmark moment, the presentation was made during a visit by an NIB delegation to the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, marking the official corporate launchpad for the newly established fund.
Leading the NIB delegation was the acting Chief Client Experience and Corporate Communications Officer, Esther Agyemang Prempeh, who handed over the cheque on behalf of the bank’s management.
She stressed that the gesture reflected NIB’s commitment to national growth and its recognition of sport as a vital engine for unity and economic opportunity.
“NIB recognises the immense potential of sports to drive positive change and economic growth,” she said. “We are proud to be the first to support this fund and encourage other corporate entities to join hands with the government to invest in the future of our athletes and sports infrastructure.”
Her call was both symbolic and strategic. For decades, inconsistent funding has been widely regarded as the single biggest obstacle to sustained sporting success in Ghana, affecting athlete preparation, facility upgrades and grassroots talent identification.
Receiving the donation, the Administrator of the Ghana Sports Fund, Dr David Kofi Mawuvi Wuaku, described the contribution as a vital spark at a crucial time. He was joined by the Chairperson of the Support Fund Board, Prof. Korye Anim-Wright.
“We are absolutely delighted by this generous gesture from NIB,” Dr Wuaku said. “They have set a wonderful example for corporate Ghana.
This donation will go a long way in helping the Board and the government to fulfil our mandate to promote and finance sports development, particularly in the areas of athlete welfare, infrastructure improvement and grassroots programmes.”
The Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, who received the delegation, did not mince words about the challenges the sector was facing. He described the lack of sustainable financing as the “biggest challenge” confronting Ghanaian sport and praised NIB for stepping forward.
“This donation is more than just money; it is the catalyst that allows the Ghana Sports Fund to begin its operations effectively,” Mr Adams said. “I want to assure the management of NIB and the general public that this fund will be managed with the highest level of transparency and accountability. Every pesewa, including this kind donation from NIB, will be used judiciously for the sole purpose of developing Ghanaian sports.”
The Ghana Sports Fund was created to mobilise additional resources to complement the government’s support, with a focus on athlete welfare, infrastructure development and grassroots programmes across multiple disciplines.
The GH¢100,000 donation may represent the first step, but stakeholders are hopeful that it will open the floodgates for other institutions to follow NIB’s lead to enable the fund to evolve into the sustainable backbone Ghanaian sport has long needed.
