Renowned Ghanaian gospel musician and preacher, Evangelist Sonnie Badu, has stated that gospel musicians in Nigeria enjoy far greater support from pastors and wealthy individuals compared to their counterparts in Ghana.
Speaking in an interview with Mama Pat on Promise FM in Kumasi, Sonnie Badu attributed Nigeria’s strong gospel music industry to a well-established support system that financially empowers musicians.
According to him, Nigerian pastors do not hesitate to invest heavily in gospel artistes, especially those with proven ministries and global reach.
“Nigerians have a lot of support systems. For example, if Nathaniel Bassey is going to do his Hallelujah Challenge in Nigeria, he can receive between USD300,000 and USD400,000 from pastors alone,” Sonnie Badu revealed.
He explained that these contributions often come without formal fundraising campaigns.
“These pastors will personally call you and say, ‘Give me your bank account number,’ and before you realise, they have sent huge sums of money,” he said.
Sonnie Badu further noted that beyond pastors, Nigeria also has wealthy businessmen and billionaires who regularly bless musicians with cash, cars, and other resources.
“Besides pastors, there are wealthy billionaires who gift musicians money and cars almost every day. They are very benevolent. They value your gift and place a premium on it,” he stated.
He emphasised that this culture of generosity enables Nigerian musicians to thrive, expand their ministries, and produce high-quality work.
Comparing the situation to Ghana, the gospel musician acknowledged that the country is blessed with immense musical talent but lacks the same level of financial and institutional support.
“Ghana has talented musicians, but we don’t have that support system like the Nigerians do,” he said.
However, Sonnie Badu was quick to add that some Ghanaian pastors are willing to support musicians but are limited by financial constraints.
“I know some young Ghanaian pastors who would do better if they had the financial capability,” he added.
