Nii Lante Vanderpuye, National Coordinator of the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP), has commended the Finance Minister, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, for what he describes as careful and disciplined management of Ghana’s economy.
Mr Vanderpuye argued that the Finance Minister’s approach demonstrates that sound economic governance depends more on prudence and practical application than on academic accolades.
He contrasted the current management style with that of the previous administration led by the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Mr Vanderpuye suggested that the recent improvements in key economic indicators reflect a shift in leadership style rather than a change in the economic structure itself.
“This is the same economy; it is just a change of hands. He’s not doing anything extraordinarily different. He’s simply applying the basic principles that people have long been advocating, but which others were reluctant to implement,” he stated.
According to Mr Vanderpuye, the developments underscore the importance of fiscal discipline, including responsible spending and avoiding waste.
“So it tells you that it’s not just a matter of books or being a Harvard student, but doing what is basic. The discipline is what is important, cutting your coat according to the size of your cloth, taking care of necessary expenditures, avoiding wastefulness and profligacy, and staying away from unnecessary celebrations,” he added in an interview with Channel One TV on Thursday, February 26.
His remarks come on the back of the government’s announcement of plans to increase Ghana’s import cover to 15 months by 2028.
The strategy places gold at the centre of what Dr Ato Forson has described as an “economic war chest” designed to cushion the country against potential global economic shocks.
