A devastating crash at Nkawanda No. 2 along the Accra–Kumasi highway has claimed the lives of seven people, following a head-on collision between a sprinter passenger bus and a tipper truck. The accident occurred on Tuesday, August 26, and has left several others injured.
The sprinter bus, which was traveling from Somanya to Sefwi, reportedly collided with an oncoming cargo truck under circumstances still under investigation. Six passengers died instantly at the scene, while a seventh victim passed away en route to the hospital.
Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene, with bodies lying motionless on the road and debris scattered across the highway. The driver and mate of the cargo truck escaped unhurt but have been taken into police custody to assist with investigations.
Preliminary reports suggest the truck driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel, and some travelers have blamed the poor condition of the road — riddled with potholes — for contributing to the tragedy.
The crash has reignited calls for urgent rehabilitation of the Accra–Kumasi highway, which has seen a rise in fatal accidents in recent months.
