There is no category ‘A’ senior high school (SHS) in three of the six newly created regions.
They are the North East, Savannah and Oti regions, the Minister of Education Haruna Iddrisu has said.
He has, therefore, appealed to traditional leaders in the affected regions to play a crucial roles in partnership with the government to address the situation.
Mr Iddrisu said this at the inauguration of the governing councils of four colleges of education in Accra.
The colleges are the Enchi College of Education, Enchi with Dr Frank Kwekucher Acker as Council Chairman; Al-Faruq College, Wenchi with Yapeiwura A.B.T. Zakaria as Chairman while Gbewaa College of Education, Pusiga has Prof Imoro Braimah as Council Chairman; and the Agogo Presbyterian Women’s College of Education, Agogo with Rev Prof Seth Asare-Danso as Chairman.
Mr Iddrisu explained that it was address the issue of equity and inclusivity that he announced publicly the decision to convert 30 category ‘C’ schools to ‘B’ and 10 category ‘B’ schools to categtory ‘A’.
The minister further announced that the ministry intended to expand infrastructure in all the category A schools.
Mr Iddrisu hinted that for the Savannah, he intended to elevate the Damongo Girls’ SHS to a category ‘A’ school, but added that, “I will walk through the process in order that I do not compromise quality for a declaration of a category ‘A’ school.”
The minister gave the assurance that the school would receive some support to befit its new status as a category ‘A’ school, adding that the Domongo SHS would equality receive attemtion.
WASSCE performance
Touching on the performance of the 2025 WASSCE candidates, Mr Iddrisu insisted the government, the ministry and the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) would not accept responsibility of the poor performance of the candidates.
“Rather, it should be a wake up call on all of us to do an assessment of where we are with the state of our secondary education programme,” he stated.
He said since 2008, when the Free SHS was launched, there had not been quality assurance, quality improvement, “and many of the institutions are still in the same infrastructure since the Free SHS was launched.
“Not a dormitory, not a classroom was added to the infrastructure with the exponential increases in their numbers, that naturally will affect the quality delivery of education,” the minister said.
