Lawyer and member of the Convention People’s Party, Kwame Jantuah, has stated that no country can compel Ghana to accept LGBTQ+ practices, insisting that such decisions must reflect the country’s values and laws.
Speaking in an interview on GTV’s breakfast show on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, Jantuah argued that Ghana remains a sovereign state with the authority to determine its own moral and legal direction without external pressure.
He explained that although the LGBTQ+ bill has been passed by Parliament, it has yet to become law because it is awaiting presidential assent.
According to him, the President has the constitutional right either to sign the bill into law or return it to Parliament with reasons.
Jantuah further noted that the delay in signing the bill is partly due to a pending case before the Supreme Court challenging its constitutionality.
However, he stressed that Ghana’s system of governance is based on the principle of separation of powers and, therefore, the judiciary does not control the duties of the President.
Touching on political reactions, he referenced comments by John Dramani Mahama, who described the bill as “not the most pressing priority.”
Jantuah cautioned that such a position could have political consequences, arguing that public sentiment in Ghana strongly opposes LGBTQ+ practices.
He also maintained that Ghana already has existing laws, including provisions in the Criminal Offences Act, which address issues related to what he described as “unnatural carnal knowledge.”
Jantuah expressed concern about the influence of social media on the youth, warning that it could contribute to the spread of LGBTQ+ practices among young people.
He added that any future legislation should aim to regulate behaviour while avoiding discrimination.
He concluded by urging political leaders, including President Mahama, to treat the bill as a priority, emphasising that Ghana must make decisions based on its cultural values and national interest rather than external influence.
