Kumasi’s Metropolitan Chief Executive, Mr. Richard Agyemang Boadi, has stirred controversy following his bold refusal to apologize for comments he made regarding street traders operating in key parts of the city.
The mayor had earlier faced heavy criticism after publicly threatening to use force against traders selling in unauthorized areas, particularly around Kejetia and Adum.
He had warned that anyone found selling in the middle of the street would be dealt with by his task force, with flogging among the proposed disciplinary actions.
Despite the public backlash and widespread discussions on social media, the mayor remains unapologetic. In a recent radio interview on Angel FM, he insisted that apologizing to the public is out of the question.
While he has walked back on the threat to physically assault traders, he remains firm in his stance that unregulated street trading must be brought to an end.
He emphasized that enforcement operations will continue, and his team will ensure that no trader is allowed to occupy the streets of Kejetia and Adum. His position has reignited the debate over how city authorities should regulate informal trade without violating the rights and dignity of citizens.
