Paul Yandoh, the Ashanti Regional Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has publicly requested that President John Dramani Mahama show leniency toward Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, regarding comments he may have made about the president.

Yandoh acknowledged that Wontumi’s remarks may have been excessive at times but emphasized that they occurred within the heat of political debate. He urged the president to view the statements as part of normal political discourse rather than as personal attacks.

In an interview on Okay FM on November 11, 2025, Yandoh revealed plans to lead a delegation to meet Mrs. Lordina Mahama, the president’s wife, to intercede on Wontumi’s behalf. The appeal is particularly significant in the context of Wontumi’s ongoing trial, which involves alleged mining activities in forest reserves and other related charges.

Yandoh drew parallels with political rhetoric on both sides, noting that statements made during campaigns, even by the president, can sometimes appear personal but are generally part of robust political discussion. He stressed the importance of tempering justice with mercy and expressed hope that an apology delivered through a trusted intermediary could help resolve tensions.

The call for forgiveness comes amid the backdrop of Wontumi’s legal challenges and serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between political expression and accountability in Ghanaian politics.
