The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua, has pointed to the COVID-19 pandemic as a major reason behind the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections.
Speaking during the NPP’s “Thank You” tour in Kumasi on April 29, Kodua revealed that after the party’s unexpected loss at the polls, leaders undertook efforts to identify the key reasons behind their electoral downfall. According to him, one of the main findings was the impact of COVID-19.
He explained that the economic hardship triggered by the pandemic had a serious effect on voters’ sentiments.
The resulting wave of poverty across Ghana in the lead-up to the election significantly swayed public opinion and ultimately hurt the NPP at the ballot box.
Kodua acknowledged that while the party accepts responsibility for the loss, the pandemic created an economic environment that undermined their chances, leaving them vulnerable during the campaign.
His comments come as part of the party’s broader effort to reconnect with the grassroots and rebuild trust with the electorate ahead of the 2028 elections.
