The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) will hold its national executive elections from September 18 to 20, 2026, following nominations, vetting and appeals processes in August.

This forms part of a comprehensive roadmap for the party’s 2026 internal elections.

The General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Kodua Frimpong, who announced this at a press conference at the party’s headquarters in Accra yesterday, also gave detailed timelines, eligibility requirements, nomination fees and supervisory structures from the polling station to the national level.

He said it was also part of the party’s broader reorganisation agenda aimed at strengthening its structures ahead of the 2028 general election.

Membership

Mr Frimpong explained that the exercise would begin with a mandatory nationwide membership registration from March 1 to March 31, 2026.

The registration, he stressed, would take place strictly at designated polling station meetings, with members required to personally record their details in the official register.

He said only members whose names appear in the validated register and who have paid their dues for at least one year would be eligible to vote or contest in the subsequent internal elections.

Following registration, the party will conduct polling station elections in April and May 2026.

Polling station, electoral areas

Nominations for polling station executives will open from April 20 to 24, with voting scheduled between April 25 and 30.

He indicated that aspirants for polling station positions must reside in the electoral area, be registered voters with the Electoral Commission and demonstrate active membership in the party.

That, he said, would be followed by electoral area elections in late May and June 2026, with nomination forms pegged at GH¢50. Electoral area election committees, similarly constituted, would oversee those contests.

Constituency, regional levels

Mr Frimpong said constituency executive elections had also been scheduled for July 2026 with nomination fees fixed at GH¢1,000 for constituency chairmanship, GH¢1,500 for parliamentary candidates’ representatives, GH¢1,000 for first and second vice-chairpersons and GH¢500 for other positions.

He said constituency elections would be conducted by a committee comprising national and regional representatives, the constituency council of elders, patrons and research officers, among others. At least one-third of delegates must be present to form a quorum.

At the regional level, elections are slated for August 2026, supervised by a Regional Elections Committee made up of national representatives, the Regional Council of Elders, parliamentary caucus representatives and party officers.

Nomination fees for regional chairmanship have been set at GH¢10,000, GH¢8,000 for vice-chairpersons and GH¢5,000 for other positions, with rebates for women and persons with disabilities.

Diaspora

The roadmap also covers chapter and external branch elections for party members in the diaspora.

Mr Frimpong said chapter elections would be conducted between June 20 and July 19, 2026, while branch elections would take place from July 15 to August 9, 2026.

He indicated that chapter and branch elections would be conducted in person and supervised by committees constituted at the respective levels, with members of such committees barred from contesting.

Standardised executive positions have been prescribed to ensure uniformity across all chapters and branches.
