NPP Petitions IGP Over Alleged Threats and Assaults by NDC Officials During Akwatia By-Election

The New Patriotic Party has formally petitioned the Inspector General of Police, accusing two senior NDC officials of threatening violence and assaulting party members during the Akwatia by-election.

  • The petition cites video evidence and calls for criminal investigations, arguing that the incidents violate Ghana’s electoral code and criminal laws.
  • The NPP says the conduct undermines democratic principles and could intimidate voters.

The New Patriotic Party has called on the Inspector General of Police to investigate what it describes as criminal behavior by two senior members of the National Democratic Congress during the recent Akwatia by-election.

According to the party, the NDC’s National Vice Chairman and Abuakwa North Communications Officer were involved in incidents that included threats of violence and physical assault. One of the accused was allegedly recorded making threatening remarks about a sitting Member of Parliament, suggesting that his presence at the polling grounds could have led to fatal consequences.

The petition also details an alleged physical altercation at the Akwatia Lorry Station, where a senior NPP official was reportedly assaulted by the same NDC figure and his supporters. Another video cited in the complaint allegedly shows the second accused issuing death threats against multiple NPP leaders.

The NPP argues that these actions breach Ghana’s Criminal Offences Act and violate the Electoral Commission’s code of conduct for political parties. The party has submitted video recordings to support its claims and is urging law enforcement to take swift action.
