Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has won the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primaries held on Saturday, January 31, 2026, securing his position as the party’s flagbearer for the upcoming general elections.
He won with a total votes of 110, 645, wh56.48 per cent
The victory was confirmed as votes continued to be counted across polling centres nationwide, with Dr Bawumia maintaining a commanding lead over his four opponents.
Over 211,000 delegates cast their votes at more than 300 polling centres across the country in what was described as a keenly contested race.
Dr Bawumia faced stiff competition from four other aspirants: former Food and Agriculture Minister Dr Bryan Acheampong, former Education Minister Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, and businessman Kennedy Ohene Agyapong.
The primaries were held across Ghana’s 16 regions, with party delegates exercising their franchise to choose their preferred candidate to lead the NPP’s charge to reclaim power.
Security personnel were deployed to all polling stations to ensure the smooth conduct of the exercise.
