Flagbearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyapong, has conceded defeat in the party’s presidential primaries, following early results indicating a clear lead for former Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
Preliminary figures from several constituencies show Dr Bawumia ahead of the other contenders as counting continues at polling centres across the country.
Speaking to the media, Mr Agyapong described the outcome as disappointing but said he remained proud of the effort put in by his campaign team.
“I would say that the results were disappointing, but it is positive. I take pride in your dedication, your untiring efforts, your commitment to this struggle,” he said.
He said he was at peace with the decision of the party’s delegates and stressed the need for unity going forward.
“I’m comfortable that, at the end of the day, the majority of the party has made a decision. Once the majority has taken a decision, it’s incumbent on all of us, patriots of our political party, to give our fullest and wholehearted support to the winner.”
Mr Agyepong confirmed that he had already reached out to Dr Bawumia to congratulate him, even as the party awaits an official declaration.
“I think we’ve just received most of the results of this presidential primaries,” he said. “I’ve just called the presumptive winner, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, to congratulate him on his victory. We are waiting for the official statement from the Electoral Commission, but it’s quite clear that he’s going to win.”
Mr Agyepong called on party members across the country to close ranks and focus on the future. “We’ve closed this chapter. It’s now time for us to work in harmony, respect one another, work together, and present the best version of ourselves to the Ghanaian people.”
He acknowledged that the road ahead would not be easy, noting that the party has about two and a half years to prepare for the 2028 general elections.
“So all of us must rally together, put this election behind us, and look forward towards 2028,” he urged.
Mr Agyepong also praised the conduct of the primaries, describing them as a credit to the party and Ghana’s democratic tradition.
“I believe that as a political tradition, we have shown the whole world that we are responsible for the sustenance of democracy in our country,” he said.
Mr Agyepong once again congratulated Dr Bawumia and pledged his support. “Once again, my congratulations, and the congratulations of my campaign team, to Dr Mahamudu Bawumia for the decisive victory. He can be sure of my fullest support.”
