Former Food and Agriculture Minister Dr Bryan Acheampong has scored a major upset by winning the Volta Region in the New Patriotic Party’s presidential primaries held on Saturday, January 31, 2026.
According to regional results, Dr Acheampong polled 5,234 votes to emerge victorious in the region, beating former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, who secured 4,098 votes.
Businessman Kennedy Ohene Agyapong came third in the region with 1,982 votes, while former Education Minister Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum garnered 125 votes.
Former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong managed 48 votes in the region.
The Volta Region recorded a total of 11,524 votes cast, with 11,477 valid votes and 47 rejected ballots.
Dr Acheampong’s victory in the Volta Region represents approximately 45.6% of the total valid votes cast, marking his strongest regional performance in the primaries.
Dr Bawumia secured about 35.7% of the votes in the region, while Kennedy Agyapong obtained approximately 17.3%.
The Volta Region results provide a boost to Dr Acheampong’s campaign, even as Dr Bawumia maintains a commanding lead in the overall national tally.
Collation continues from over 300 polling centres across the country, with more than 211,000 delegates having participated in the exercise nationwide.
